Spider-Woman 9 concept variant: When I emailed Marv Wolfman asking if he had any other concept sketches of the Black Cat that was intended for Spider-Woman (40s Femme Fatale-slouch hat and black dress), I got a response indicating that the cover was the only sketch. Since the cover only showed a shadow of a cat, the Black Cat was probably still in concept (40s Femme Fatale-slouch hat and black dress). See original concept cover by Infantino and Leialoha. When Wolfman resigned from Spider-Woman due to artistic differences, he took the Black Cat concept with him to the Spider-Man title he was writing. There, the Black Cat concept was developed. But I have always been obsessed of what the Black Cat concept might have been for Spider-Woman. So I asked one of my favorite inker/illustrator Bob Wiacek to recreate the Infantino/Leialoha cover concept but with the developed Spider-Man/Black Cat concept. I made sure that the Black Cat was in a front view as appose to the rear view Pollard did that was rejected by Marvel. And the results were amazing. This would have been a great cover for the Spider-Woman title. Anyway I had a great time coloring this piece. I decided to take the original line art of the shadow and work it in as a shadow with a motion blur. The effect turned out very well. |
